Daar dhokli is another popular Gujarati comfort meal. Loosely translated into spiced flour dumplings in a savory lentil gravy, this recipe is sure to have your mouth watering even before you eat it. Using the Instant Pot to make this classic dish, we’ve cut down on cooking, prep and cleanup time. This is yet another healthy, hearty and vegan dish which you’ll want in your weekly rotation.

  1. Turn on the Instant Pot to SAUTE mode
  2. Wait until the Instant Pot display reads “HOT”
  3. Add oil to the steel pot
  4. Add the rye (mustard seeds) and jeeru (cumin seeds)
  5. Allow to sizzle for 30 seconds
  6. Add the hing (asafoetida) to the oil
  7. Add the dry red chilies
  8. Allow to sizzle for 30 seconds
  9. Add the curry leaves - BE CAREFUL as they will splatter
  10. Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
  11. Add in the tomatoes
  12. Add in the toovar daal (pidgeon pea lentils)
  13. Add in the ginger, green chilies, turmeric, red chili powder, salt
  14. Mix well to incorporate all ingredients
  15. Add 2 cups water
  16. Mix to make sure nothing is stuck to the bottom of the pot
  17. Close and lock the lid on the Instant Pot
  18. Turn the vent to sealing to prevent steam from escaping
  19. Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
  20. Press MANUAL on the Instant Pot (high pressure)
  21. Set timer to 15 minutes
  22. Make the dumpling dough while the daar cooks:
  23. To the wheat flour in a mixing bowl, add the spices:
  24. Add sesame seeds, turmeric, salt, red chili powder, cumin seeds and garlic
  25. Drizzle oil into the flour
  26. Using your hands, massage all ingredients into the flour
  27. In small increments, add water to form a firm dough
  28. Knead the dough until it comes together and coat with oil
  29. Divide the dough into 3 or 4 balls
  30. Sprinkle all purpose flour on to your rolling surface
  31. Roll the dough into a ¼ inch thin round using a rolling pin
  32. Using a pizza cutter, cut the dumplings into diamond shapes
  33. Set aside the diamond shaped dumplings until the daar gravy is done
  34. Once the timer goes off, allow the pressure to Naturally Release for at least 10 minutes
  35. Manually release the steam by opening the vent
  36. The silver prong will drop back into the lid BE CAREFUL OF THE HOT STEAM
  37. Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
  38. Open the lid to see that the lentils are soft
  39. You may remove the dry red chilies before blending
  40. Using your hand blender, blend up the daar to get a smooth consistency
  41. Add extra water to the daar gravy if you want a thinner gravy
  42. To the gravy, add lemon juice, brown sugar and peanuts
  43. Mix well
  44. Gently add in the diamond shaped dough into the daar gravy
  45. Gently stir to ensure the dough doesn’t stick together
  46. Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
  47. Press MANUAL on the Instant Pot (high pressure)
  48. Set timer to 2-4 minutes (4 minutes will give you extra soft dough dumplings)
  49. Once the timer goes off, manually release the steam by opening the vent
  50. The silver prong will drop back into the lid BE CAREFUL OF THE HOT STEAM
  51. Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
  52. Carefully open the lid
  53. Garnish with cilantro
  54. Serve and enjoy!

Serving suggestion
Serve with a cooling side of yogurt-make your own!

No Onion/ No Garlic
Omit the garlic in the dough and follow along with the original recipe.
